Well, you can see from the pictures and my own comments below that our September T3 event at Cedar Knoll was a big hit! (More great pictures are available on our Facebook page and the SFCC Happenings page of our website.) The “parade of hits” continues In October with our first-ever participation with surrounding Chambers at this month’s “Big BASH!” networking event at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Springfield. Hope to see everyone there and encourage your feedback as we consider future participation in this and all of our events.
Our South County High School fall sports program sponsorship campaign was over-subscribed, indicating, to me at least, that there is some pent-up community outreach/sponsorship interest out there such that we will continue to promote appropriate opportunities when we learn of them.
If getting involved is more your thing, we are actively looking ahead to Spring 2020 and beyond for some planning help with possible Earth Day activities, a breakfast event, the annual Spring Teen Job Fair and our own SFCC annual meeting. In addition, we have planning/working group committee opportunities for event planning focused on next year’s 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment, with an eye towards celebrating our local area’s connection with expanded voting rights, the Suffragists’ movement and
the new Suffragists’ memorial expected to be unveiled next summer. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you or someone you might recommend to us has an interest in being part of the planning process for any of these (or other!) future activities.
Lastly, I am disappointed to report having begrudgingly accepted Darlene Gardner’s notice that she will no longer serve as the administrative support person for the Chamber. The hours have expanded somewhat since Darlene agreed to assist us, and family-care obligations have her traveling out of the area with more frequency these days. So, if you know of someone who might be interested in a part-time, work-from-home administrative position with very flexible hours supporting our Chamber efforts, please let me know or have the person reach out to me directly.
I’ll not plan on circulating another of these before the end of the month, so have a happy and safe October and Halloween! If your organization is involved in any Halloween “trunk or treat,” seasonal food drive or similar events, be sure to let us know by submitting it to our community events calendar.

A Thirsty Thursday Like No Other
It was a gorgeous night with made-to-order weather. The venue, Cedar Knoll, provided happy hour and sweeping views of the Potomac. Two guitarists added a musical backdrop. A muscle car show was happening on the front lawn. And, oh yeah, there was axe-throwing.
Michael Dickerson, the owner of Flippin Steel, brought a mobile range and provided individualized instruction on how to safely fling axes.
"It was, hands down, the best chamber event I’ve ever attended!” SFCC chairman Tom Repczynski said of the event, which took place Sept. 19 at the restaurant on the Potomac. The chairman added that the "unique axe- and knife-throwing experience added an adrenaline rush to the T3."
"The combined crowds intermixed seamlessly, and everyone who wanted to do so, got to try their hand at throwing blades of steel under Michael's direction," Repczynski said.
The SFCC's T3s are typically the third Thursday of every month, although another special event is planned for October. Read on for information about the Big Bash.

Register Now for the Big Bash
Don't miss the chance to network with members of the South Fairfax, Mount Vernon Lee and Greater Springfield chambers of commerce at the Big Bash Business Associates Social Hour.
The Big Bash will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Springfield. There will be complimentary appetizers, door prizes and a cash bar. The event is free, but registration is required.
Note: Halloween is around the corner. Costumes optional.

Melinda Fortunato
Melinda Fortunato, the owner of Best Travel, entered the travel profession to spread the love and joy of travel to others. As a child, she lived overseas in Korea and Antigua and then continued the traveling life as a military spouse living in Europe. She calls upon her background and her expertise as an experienced Travel Advisor to bring the world to her clients. Tracey Wood
Tracey Wood is also the SFCC's membership chair.
October’s member of the month Tracey Wood has owned her own business since 1989. Inkwell Duck, Incorporated, is a proposal and productions company that specializes in consulting, research and technical writing to win government contracts for businesses. The company has also recently branched off into entertainment filmmaking. She is also a certified yoga instructor and weight loss management coach specializing in stress reduction since 2014.
Tracey serves her community as:
- A Fairfax County Small Business Commissioner
- Supporter of local actions and campaigns
- A board member to our local chambers of commerce
- United States DoD yoga support for PTSD & Stress Management
- A health committee member on the area’s largest public service sorority—Delta Sigma Theta
How the community supports Tracey:
- provides filming locations
- selects Inkwell to develop business to government (B2G) government relations and capture management strategies
- chooses Inkwell for technical writing projects
- attends Tracey’s group and individual yoga sessions and/or weight management workshops.
She resides with her husband of 33-plus years, a retired US Army Officer, in the Mount Vernon district of Fairfax County. They are empty nesters who enjoy grandparenting, cooking, and taking in the rich history and culture of the Washington, DC area.
