Chamber Meets with County Police
Terry Head recently represented the South Fairfax Chamber of Commerce at the Commander in The Community meeting held by the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) at the Lorton Library. This was actually the final event in a series of five community outreach meetings held by Captain Greg Fried, the Commander of the Franconia District Station.
Captain Fried, along with other officers and staff from the Franconia District Station, shared an update and data on 2019 crime here in the Franconia District, as well as, across the County. There was a 4% increase in Group A offenses locally as compared to a -4.63% decrease for similar offenses across all of Fairfax County. Larceny * (the taking or theft of personal property, including from autos) was up 11.88%; whereas Burglary (entering a building illegally with the intent to commit a crime) was down -21%. Fraud, primarily credit card fraud, was up 14.6%. Assaults were up 5% and drug offenses were down -8.5%.
The attendees were informed on the FCPD’S future vision and what they are planning with regard to crime prevention, as well as, community outreach and enhanced communications with South County residents and business owners.
*Larceny from parked vehicles is something surrounding neighborhoods have experienced lately and the police have provided the flyer below to hopefully help in preventing this particular crime.
An update was also provided on the status of the planned new FCPD District Station and Animal Shelter to be built in Laurel Hill on Lorton Road, which has experienced delays and will now likely be coming on line in late 2022.

Love is in the air and now at the Workhouse! SFCC members joined local Fairfax officials and artist Marlon Diggs, “Marly McFly,” in unveiling the Virginia Tourism LOVEworks sign which is now permanently located on the Workhouse campus in Lorton.
McFly was selected by a jury from an open call for artists to have their work featured on the LOVEworks sign. Using acrylic and spray paint, the Virginia native says the transformation took four days. “I wanted to use a lot of bright colors, layered on top of each other to symbolize how here in Virginia we are a melting pot of culture and people, always on the go, intertwined with each other, sitting in traffic together… so I wanted to bring that all to one place.” McFly says he found inspiration in the word “love” and created a collage of facial expressions communicating this term of affection. The LOVE letters, representing the “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan, is Fairfax County’s first permanent Virginia LOVEworks sign. Last summer, as part of the state’s celebration of the iconic slogan’s 50th anniversary, Visit Fairfax, the county’s official tourism organization, held a ribbon-cutting for the sign before sending it off on an 11-stop tour of Fairfax County, highlighting the various visitor experiences within the destination. “Visit Fairfax is thrilled that Fairfax County’s first official LOVEworks sign now has a permanent home at the stunning Workhouse Arts Center, a place that brings together the county’s past and present in a beautifully rich way and truly showcases the power of art,” said Barry Biggar, Visit Fairfax President & CEO. “Visitors and residents will enjoy snapping photos with the sign and spending time at this gem of an attraction in Fairfax County.”
